“I went to the premiere of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea at the Pacific Theatre. It was yesterday but I can still feel the emotional blow in my stomach. The play hits you right there. I stopped breathing for about 80 minutes; just intensely focused on the two main characters, Roberta and Danny. I heard the anger and sadness, the psychological wounds. I sensed their beautiful souls and felt their desperate need to find a safe, genuine place to reach out and let go of the guilt and pain. John Patrick Shanley`s dialogue is raw and darkly witty, it can be poetic one moment and drop on your head with extreme intensity the next. I had never seen the play before, yet I can say that the Pacific Theatre is an ideal location due to the rather small, almost intimate size and the alley format. Director Jason Goode created a minimal and efficient mise-en-scène, allowing the story and the movements to unfold and be delivered in a very organic way. The actors are absolutely amazing. I know this is a fictional space, but Lori Triolo and Aleks Paunovic are not simply acting, they are Roberta and Danny. Sitting in the second row, I could feel their intense presence. The actors bring you into their world effortlessly, the dialogue just flows. For some reason, I finally understand Aristotle’s notion of catharsis, but that’s just me. This production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is an emotionally dense, beautiful theatrical experience. Make sure you see it.”
